3D printer gear systems — including extruders and transmission gears — usually combine metal and engineering plastics. These components operate under high-frequency meshing, low-speed heavy loads, frequent start-stop cycles, and chamber temperatures of 40–80°C. They are also exposed to PLA/ABS debris and dust. Standard lithium grease often lacks strong adhesion and can be thrown off during operation, leading to dry friction and faster wear. Some lubricants are not compatible with plastics like POM and nylon, causing swelling or brittleness. Poor anti-wear performance may result in gear pitting, increased backlash, print layer defects, misalignment, and abnormal noise. Dust buildup can also mix with grease to form sludge, reducing transmission efficiency and shortening equipment life.
