The history of MSDS

The earliest records of MSDS were found in the tombs of ancient Egyptians. Some were written on the tomb walls, and some were written on a type of paper. These records date back over 4,000 years. They all described some drugs used to treat diseases, including the names of the drugs, their sources, processing, storage, and usage procedures, as well as some warnings about incorrect usage.

The "Occupational Safety and Health Association of the United States" began to require MSDS for hazardous substances on May 26, 1986.

Both the European Union and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) use the term SDS. However, in the United States, Canada, Australia, and many countries in Asia, SDS is also called MSDS.

In both domestic and international trade, sellers in all countries must provide legal documents that describe the products. Due to the different laws and regulations regarding chemical management and trade in various countries, including the states of the United States, and the fact that these regulations change monthly, if the provided MSDS is incorrect or incomplete, legal liability will be pursued. Therefore, the quality of the MSDS is an important indicator for evaluating a company's strength, image, and management level.

In 2008, the standard in China was GB/T16483-2000, which was called CSDS. In 2008, the revised standard GB/T16483-2008 "Chemical Safety Data Sheet - Content and Project Sequence" was unified with the International Organization for Standardization, and was abbreviated as SDS.

The purpose of MSDS

MSDS is a document used by chemical manufacturers and importers to describe the physical and chemical properties of chemicals (such as pH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) and the potential hazards to users' health (such as carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, etc.). It is also a comprehensive document providing information on the safe use of hazardous chemicals, emergency rescue and disposal in case of leakage, and legal regulations, etc.

The function of MSDS

MSDS is a comprehensive document that provides information on the flammability and explosiveness, toxicity, environmental hazards, as well as safe usage, emergency response for leaks, personal protection, reactivity, main physicochemical parameters in ecology, transportation, and legal regulations of hazardous chemicals. It serves as a carrier for transmitting safety information. Its main functions are as follows,

1. Provide information on the hazards of chemicals to protect chemical product users.

2. Ensure safe operation and provide technical information for formulating safety operation procedures for hazardous chemicals.

3. Provide technical information that is helpful for emergency rescue and accident emergency handling.

4. Guide the safe production, safe circulation, and safe use of chemicals.

5. It is an important foundation and information source for chemical registration management.
